Franchise Description: McDonald’s USA, LLC is the franchisor. The franchisor is a wholly owned subsidiary of its parent and predecessor, McDonald’s Corporation. The franchisor develops, operates, franchises, and services a system of restaurants that prepare, assemble, package, and sell a limited menu of value-priced foods under the “McDonald's System.” A grant of a McDonald’s franchise authorizes franchisees to operate a McDonald’s restaurant business at a specific location and to use the McDonald’s System in the operation of that restaurant business for a specific period of time. The franchisor offers four types of franchises:

1. Traditional Restaurant: Franchisedirect.com offered is located in freestanding buildings, storefronts, food courts, and other locations. The franchisee operates a full-menu restaurant, offering the public a high standard of quality and uniformity in food and service.
2. Satellite Locations: The franchisee is granted the right to operate the franchise in a retail store, strip center, airport, universities, hospitals, and other diverse locations. These restaurants serve a scaled-down menu of a traditional McDonald’s restaurant and, in some cases, may also serve non-McDonald’s trademarked products.
3. STO and STR Locations: “Small Town Oil” locations are situated in fuel stations/convenience stores and operate a full-menu McDonald’s restaurant within the shared space. “Small Town Retail” locations that anchor a small retail center in rural communities.
4. BFL Franchises: For “Business Facilities Lease” franchises, the franchisor grants franchises with leases that include the business facilities. These are limited cases.

Training Overview: Franchisees must complete the training program successfully before signing the Franchise Agreement or paying any money to the franchisor. The franchisor operates Hamburger University (HU), the international training center for the McDonald's system. 

All courses and learning events are offered at frequent intervals and are designed to give franchisees specific skill sets in the various facets of the conduct of a McDonald's restaurant. The basic minimum core training, which franchisees must complete to be qualified to operate a McDonald’s restaurant, is known as the Candidate Development Program. 

The Candidate Development Program is deployed through Campus and Fred, which allows franchisees to complete and track the progress of their assigned learning online. It can take six months to two years to complete all learning plans, from Shift Leader through Restaurant Leader. The complete training program and materials include many elements. 

As part of the training program, franchisees must perform and master all of the crew and management functions at the restaurant. At the opening of the restaurant, a franchise business partner will spend time with franchisees providing assistance and refinement of previous training and instruction. Annual meetings, conventions, various workshops, and other training sessions may be conducted on an ongoing basis within each field office, and McDonald’s may require franchisees to pay for the costs associated with that ongoing training or participation. In a recent ValueSelling Associates/Training Industry survey, two-thirds of executives said sales reps calling on them are not effective communicators. That is an unacceptable grade attributed to a group of professionals whose primary job is to communicate and connect with buyers.

Today’s sales professionals miss the mark while facing the challenge of mastering many different communication platforms. Face-to-face meetings are no longer the norm. Telephone, email, text, and virtual meetings are much more prevalent. The reliance on technology in this constantly connected world, requires shorter and more ad hoc communication which must be clear and consistent to be effective.

Communication generally consists of four disciplines: writing and reading, speaking and listening. Most sales people focus and prepare on speaking. “What do I say? How do I present? Is my pitch perfect?” Yet, having great speaking skills is mastering only 25% of what communication entails, and often comes at the expense of listening, which has a measurable impact on effective communication.

To become better sales professionals, below are three tips to improve the effectiveness of both business and personal communication.

1. Engage active listening.

Face it, sometimes it is hard to listen. We live in a world of distractions and pre-occupation. Listening is important, but few actually practice active listening. At ValueSelling Associates, a key sales call component of our  management is asking confirming questions. A confirming question is a summary of what has been heard, asked in a question format, to ensure mutual understanding. The power of the confirming question is that in order to ask it, you have to fully listen and pay attention. As you listen actively, be sure to:

• Minimize distractions. Our brains cannot handle multiple complex tasks at a time.
• Pay attention. Focus on both the words and the way the words are delivered. Only 8% of communication is the words that are said. The balance is non-verbal cues, speed and tone, which can provide insight to the level of interest.
• Avoid assumptions and pause before replying.
• Listen to understand, not to respond.
• Take notes.

2. Be clear and concise.

A few weeks ago, I was at a trade show and conference with a multitude of vendors showcasing their products and services. I stopped at one of the flashiest booths because I thought the company offered a service I was interested in. The representative had the gift of gab, yet about 20 minutes into the pitch, I realized I had no idea what he was selling. I finally stopped him and asked, “What does this actually do?”

The take away from this scenario is that delivering clear and concise messages takes time and practice. Attention spans are short. When we cannot clearly and succinctly describe what we do, or fail to answer a question, we will most likely lose the listener and the message will fall short. A best practice is to eliminate unnecessary words.

Design Your Supply Chain as a Portfolio of Options.

Wave after wave of disruptions have roiled global supply chains. In addition to navigating the tariff wars triggered by the United States, companies have had to contend with export controls on critical inputs such as rare-earth metals, advanced semiconductors, and pharmaceutical precursors; shifts in geopolitical alignments as the Global South has deepened its ties with China; and conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, where trade sanctions have been used as weapons. Yet the supply chain planning tools most companies use were built for a world where this level of volatility was the exception. Now it is the rule.

For more than a decade—and especially since the pandemic—the guiding principle for supply chain management has been to design supply chains for resilience: Build buffers, diversify suppliers, engage in collaborative planning with members of the network, and so on. That makes sense when shocks are relatively rare. But it is inadequate in a world where the rules themselves—trade agreements, tariff regimes, regulatory standards—keep changing. In such an environment, companies need to design their supply chains as portfolios of real options that provide them with the right—but not the obligation—to take future actions.

Companies have long applied this approach to strategy formulation and capital budgeting. But it has not been widely employed in supply chain management. A few multinationals—particularly those with extensive experience managing cross-border operations—have intuitively adopted elements of this approach, but most companies still evaluate supply chain investments using traditional discounted cash-flow methods that treat flexibility as a cost, not an asset. Real options give companies the ability to defer an investment in new capacity until the regulatory picture clears, to decrease operations in jurisdictions that become unfavorable, to expand production into new jurisdictions, and to switch sourcing or assembly from one location to another.

In this article we present a framework for designing a supply chain that way. It is based on our combined research and consulting work with global manufacturers navigating trade policy shifts, as well as others’ work on the theory of real options as applied to strategic investments. Our framework rests on three interconnected ideas. First, the major sources of uncertainty are not just volatile markets and unpredictable events; they include volatile institutions and their rules. Second, a company should view its supply chain as a portfolio of interrelated options whose value depends on how those options are structurally coordinated. And third, the constraint on exercising the options is not just capital but also capabilities: the local production expertise, qualified vendor networks, and regulatory knowledge that take years to build.

The Supply Chain Options Framework

In a world of stable trade rules, the right supply-chain strategy is straightforward: Commit to the lowest-cost configuration and optimize. But when the rules themselves are volatile, the goal is not to find the optimal configuration but to maintain the ability to reconfigure—and that requires a portfolio of options. Our framework can help. (See the exhibit “The Supply Chain Options Framework.”) It organizes four options according to their primary purpose: protecting the company when conditions worsen or positioning it to capture value when conditions improve.

The objective for leaders is to maintain the right to act as conditions shift: committing when clarity is sufficient and preserving flexibility when it is not. Sometimes this requires actions that are defensive, and sometimes it requires actions that are offensive. Having options to make both types of moves is essential.
